Camellia sasanqua ID?

| I'm new to camellias as my big passion is antique roses. However, I have a mostly shady spot where the rose did not thrive, and bought a camellia named C. sasanqua hana jiman to go in its place. I think now that the plant is misnamed since it has small flowers that are a soft, cool pink whereas hana jiman is described as white with pink edges. Is there any way to identify this camellia? I'm sure there must be many cultivars so it seems a daunting task. Can anyone tell me how I should go about this? Also, will this camellia thrive in an area that is primarily shady. I'd like to grow it as a climber against a light beige house wall.
Thank you in advance for your help.

| Hi Ingrid! I am passionate about antique roses also, but my other passion is camellias. The best chance you may have in identifyting your camellia is to contact someone in your local camellia society. There isn't a great deal of information available on the internet, or in books, on camellias. It's frustrating when I've gotten so used to how easy it is to obtain information about roses. I've noticed with a couple of my sasanquas, that the bloom color is deeper at times during cooler weather, and somewhat changeable, just like my roses. Sandy |

| Hi Sandy, I had answered you but somehow it didn't appear on this thread. I was saying how nice it would be to have a Help Me Find Roses for camellias. What a lot of wonderful pictures there would be to enable us. I really like the sasanquas for their more natural look and enjoy the singles and half doubles most, unlike my love for very full antique roses. At any rate I don't have many shady spots for camellias and the sunny ones of course are allocated to the roses. One could spend endless amounts of time and money discovering new plants, but for now I'll probably stick mostly to old roses and reblooming irises. Ingrid |
