Camellia - double blossoms ?

| I have two camellias - a Scentsation and an In-the-Pink - both japonicas. The In-the-Pink bloomed last season, single flower, then this year it has quite a few double flowers.
They are lovely, (except for the damage from the rain recently), but the stems don't appear to be strong enough to hold the extra weight. Is it normal for camellias to have double flowers on weak stems or should I prune in some way to make them stronger?

| Hi Bejay ... The circumstances you describe are pretty common, and its not unusual at all to have two buds at the end of a limb, sometimes blooming at the same time! If the stems are weak and leggy, why not prune them back after it blooms, and give the plant a good overall grooming. Open up the middle, take off last year's growth all around the outside, and see if it strengthens up. Its a great way to relax. Snip-snip! ... Forrest |
