Has anyone ever divided a camelia?

We have three large camelias in the front yard that are about 10 feet tall and very healthy. They are located under a couple of oak trees. I'm not sure what type of camelias they are, my mom bought them from a small nursery that has since gone out of business. The nursery simply called the plants everblooming camelias. They bloom several times a year but heaviest in late winter to early spring and have never had a problem with bud blast or diseases. The flowers are pink doubles and fall off intact.

We were just cleaning up around the camelias when we noticed that they are all sending up multiple new stalks, some several inches away from the main plant. Is this normal? Can the bushes be safely divided?

Those may be seedlings, from seeds that fell and germinated in the soil. Or maybe root sprouts -- you may have to poke around to tell which it is. But either way, yes they can be dug and potted up until they put out a better root system, then planted in the ground. For a root sprout, try to get as much root and soil as you can, keeping it intact if possible, it will have a better chance of survival. Keep it well watered the first year. I have had pretty good luck doing this. Now is the time, while the plant is dormant. It sure is fun to try.
