Toronto cold alert deaths vs Vancouver palm trees

Cold can hit the west coast an throw snow on the palm trees in the Los Angeles area like this winter. But winter after winter the palm trees on the BC west coast to the equator remain in both private and public gardens.

And it's nothing like the cold that kills the homeless in Toronto. 3 homeless men died in 48 hours of this latest cold alert and this winter is easy compared to last year's ice storm which ended up with flooded basements as unheated homes burst their water pipes. Windsor, ON hit minus 25C on a winter when Victoria, BC had flowers before spring.

Now we know why people like Thomas Hobbs move to BC. His level of gardening is impossible to achieve in Ontario or the east coast. Very talented and lucky man.

I'm in zone 6a... well formally after this year it shoud probably change to 5b. I have a friend in London Ontario who just lost a "cold hardy palm" this winter. I lost a small needle palm last winter.

If anything this February will go down as the coldest in decades, I'm on pace for an average temp of 10 F, literally what one would expect in Thunder Bay or Winterpeg.

If this is the new normal, I should build a greenhouse...LOL.

Finally February is done, average temp came in at 8 F.

Yikes..

Anyhow my Basjoo patch has 3 feet plus of mixed mulch on it and quite a distance out from the corms...so I anticipate no problems...I will open it up to the elements in mid April as always. I probably won't save more than a foot or so of P-stem even though some of them I left with four to five feet intact.

Here's a picture from just before they went to sleep last November.

The dozen or so other bananas and palms are indoors waiting this out...won't be long now in the low 40s today with heavy melting...long way to go yet though with an eighteen inch snowpack with 4 foot drifts in the main gardens by the house...lol.
