Hello Claubill, I bought some crocosmia last year and only a couple of them flowered late October. I don't know much about these, but I thought they were just still immature. I'll start mine early also and maybe I'll get more blooms also. Do you grow Acidanthera or Canna's? This is my first year overwintering these and I am not sure when to start these either? Janet

I've grown crocosmia a couple of times. the flowers are gorogeous. I planted themin fairly good soil and fertilized them about once every 2 weeks. Had lots of blooms. I found that the orange (can't recall the name) was the hardiest in Zone 5. I would dig them up at the end of the season to save them for the following year.

If you are considering starting them early, then you need to look at a few things. Can you give them enough light to hold them over until you can get them outside. Secondly, you will have to harden them off when you put them out.

Zone 3!! Brrrrrrr!!!! that's cold. so I'm imagining that your spring weather is still quite a ways off. You might want to consider starting them at the end of March or mid April. If you keep them warm you can speed up their rooting and growth.

I start my Cannas around the middle of March. You too will have to look at light levels for your cannas. I put mine under fluorescent lights until I can get them into the greenhouse. You can wait until mid April to start your cannas without any problems. Pot them up using pro-mix BX. They are easier to carry when the pot driesout abit.
