Help Identifying Plant

Posted by Tiffa Surrey, BC (My Page) on

I have this plant in my yard I am having some trouble identifying. I never paid much attention to it until now. It's been producing berries and almost looks as though it may produce flowers at some point. I never noticed it due to the large amount of hydrangea bushes in my yard. Maybe it is a hydrangea bush? I was hoping someone here could identify it for me. It doesn't look like my other hydrangea bushes. My kids play in the backyard and I'd like to find out if the berries are harmful.

I live in the Surrey, BC area. I took the pictures below yesterday (Feb. 23rd, 2011).

RE: Help Identifying Plant

I've never grown it myself but looks like the pictures I've seen of Japanese Skimmia. Link below says both the leaves and berries of this one are poisonous.

Here is a link that might be useful: Japanese Skimmia
