I garden in zone 2 and virginia creeper does just fine.

I have 2 Boston Ivies growing on my fence which I planted 6 years ago, and one that was planted by a neighbour, and now grows on another fence.

I don't know how big they would grow in Zone 2, but in Zone 6, they are growing rapidly, and I wish I had picked something different. Mine are still controllable since they are only six years old, but the neighbours' vine, which is much older, has grown all over the roof and sides of their garage, and is now encroaching on my fence - I have to rip out large portions of it about 2-3 times a year to stop it from rampaging all over.

Also, all 3 ivies do attract yellow jackets and since one of the vines is near my back door, the wasps present a problem at times.

Could you plant a series of clematis? Are any of them hardy to Zone 2? If they are, you could pick ones that flower at different times, and then you would always have some colour. I don't find that the wasps or bees are attracted to any of my clematis (I have 9 different ones), but then I don't have any of the fragrant ones.
