As they instructed, these microscopic worms are best applied mid May or early June. The reason is that this is the best time for these creatures to attack those lawn grubs. You see these grubs spent most of the cold season deep in the soil and they will start to emerge mid May or early June with when the weather is consistently warmer. Since the weather has been erratic, check the 14 day forecast for your area www.weathernetwork.com - you can at least predict when the last frost date is.

If you are concerned about how to store them in the meantime, I understand they are best refrigerated until such time you can apply them.

I used them several years ago to treat wireworms and they worked like a charm. I am starting to see the numbers of wireworms climbing again, so I'll probably buy some more nematodes this year. When I used them the first time, I did it over the Victoria Day weekend. In my case I needed to do it on the earlier side of May/June because my plants are in containers and containers heat up faster than the ground. Nematodes are killed off by warmer temperatures.

I'm in Montreal, so my weather is similar to yours. The official 'Average Last Frost Date' is May 3 (Ottawa's is May 6). I'd recommend the last two weeks in May as the best weeks to treat, since it can get awfully hot awfully fast here. But check the weather - this year you might be better off treating earlier than that.

Thanks. They say freezing kills them and cold temps make them dormant so it doesn't really make sense I guess to apply now. Funny how they sell them so soon but like you say, they can be stored in the fridge. I will wait for the May long weekend and fight the lines at the nursery. sigh, usually try to stay clear on the long weekend - crazy time at the gardening centres. Off topic, I did a stroll thru today at it was so bright and cheery I bought a geranium which I will propagate.

Yep they do need warmer temps to thrive.

On another issue, you can reduce your garden grubs killing the buggers when they are adults. Do you know what kind of bugs these are - the beetles? or those that look like giant flies with long legs?
