Well, I am building a trellis made of bamboo and lashing so I can grow my squash upwards while utilizing the space below for other vegetables. I have a raised bed and I am trying my hand at square foot gardening, maximizing as much space as possible for growing all forms of vegetables and herbs. What do you intend to use your arbour for? I wanted to make something similar with branches that are nailed together.

I have made a few trellis out of branches and a couple of arbours out branches too. They are entrance ways into my backyard, supposedly. I find it is better to tie them with string, twine, or wire, rather than nails or screws. Less branches breaking in the wind that way.

I have started with snow peas, and lettuce. I will grow squash, Hubbard and acorn. Kentucky pole beans, cucumber, tomatoes, and morning glories. Plus.

The bamboo is a great idea,I do a different square foot gardening, in an informal bed with plants sharing close spaces. The weeds often get the best of me, so this year I am trying cardboard for munlch.

I got a great weed pulling tool too.

I have a front yard perennial bed with plants growing very close together and sometimes overlapping. Close planting cuts down on weeds taking root.
