The Kong Coleus myth

alexg

You know the series - they charge a fortune for 10 seeds. or sell them off as single plants for 6 or more bucks each. Every year for the past few they have introduced a new colour (this year its Marble I think), and try as you might, you can't find last year's, well, here's something I have learned:

3 years ago I paid dearly for 10 Kong rose seeds - good germination, got 10 plants. I decided to let one go to seed and collected. Last year I sowed the collected seed - got hundreds of plants that all came true. I collected more seed and attempted to overwinter some inside - they all made it! Usually I can't overwinter coleus - it always dies - not these.

So, it is a conspiracy!

Buy one Kong in the colour you like - take and root cuttings, over winter them and collect seed from the mother plant - you'll be trading it forever.

Just thought I'd share.
