Asparagus

The Rodale Organic Gardening Encyclopedia recommends applying salt to asparagus beds for better growth. And I have read that it also inhibits weeds. Has anybody actually ever tried this? Does it work to suppress weeds? I am gardening in a former horse pasture and all it wants to do is grow back - it's a never ending battle. If the asparagus can take the salt, and it kills the weeds, I'd like to try it. I have several 10-15 ft rows of asparagus and I'm just wondering how much salt to put per gallon of water.

I also want to move some of the asparagus to a new bed, but they are currently sending up shoots - is it too late to transplant? Should I wait?

Finally, many of the new asparagus spears are really fat - still tender and tasty, but they look HUGE - am I doing something wrong? Others are slim and as you'd expect, so I can't think of a reason why some are fat and some are not.

Thanks in advance!
