You can have only one tomato plant because tomatoes are self-pollinating, as long as they are planted outdoors or near air currents or a breeze.

You can have one dozen tomato plants, one hundred tomato plants, or simply one lovely little plant. Dianasan is 100% correct.

One thought: if garden space is very tight, you have another option: containers. I've grown full-size tomato plants in 5-gallon buckets (plain plastic, with drainage holes). Others, like Tumbler, grow very well in small containers, like hanging pots. Tumbler is a hybrid (so you can't save the seed) but its tomatoes are small, sweet, and plentiful. I try to grow at least a few each year when I can. And your husband would like the early yield and sweet flavour.
