Hydrangea pest

I have several beautiful hydrangea bushes which grow mainly in shade. I noticed today that the new growth of leaves and buds are closing up and inside is something nasty. I cut each of the closed off leaves but i'd like to protect the rest from this pest. Can anyone help with a solution?

There is a sort of caterpillar called a leaf tier that rolls up leaves to form a protective shell. They aren't particularly loyal to any one sort of plant. If that's what you have, then handpicking them or cutting off the leaves as you did are the best solutions.

Spraying with Bt (Bacillus thuringiensis) would help control them when they're small, before they have rolled up the leaves.
