My Lilacs Won't Grow!

I planted different lilac shrubs/trees over 5 years ago and they are growing at a very very very slow pace. Some less than a foot a year. They get plenty of sunshine and water as required. Can someone please tell me what I can do to make them grow or why they are not growing.

Do you remember what cultivars or varieties you got? Some types like Dwarf Korean Lilacs only grow to 4 or 5 feet max.

Have you been fertilizing regularly?

If they are not dwarf varieties, and since they are getting plenty of sun and water, I suggest going back to whomever sold them to you and see if they have any ideas on what might be wrong.

The kinds of cultivars matter and also the quality of the soil. If you have hardpack clay soil, the growth might have been inhibited. Break the soil up beneath it and add some compost to help.
