Is it possible to grow regular sweet potatoes in the store, and get eating potatoes from them, if they are started indoors early?

I've done it several times. They don't as big as the ones in the store get, but you will get something that is big enough to eat. I made french fries with mine :-)

I start them in early March or late February. I plant the tuber under a bit of soil, keep it slightly damp and warm. After about 6-8 weeks, I get root growth, and after another 6 weeks or so, I get shoots that I cut off and root in soil (don't root in water, you'll waste time). They root easily and as soon as it's reliably over 10C at night I plant them out. I dig them up in the fall before we get the first frost.
