This fall, buy some Allium bulbs and plant them. I'd try that. Most creatures like moles which I have will avoid areas of the gardens which are planted with Allium and Garlic bulbs. Some Alliums are cute - I grow the Roseum for now but plan to buy lots more this fall and plant them everywhere. They will naturalize as well which is good. There's all kinds of sizes and colour available, and prices of course. :O)

Thank you Tiffy. this is just the kind of help I`m looking for. I have some alliums but not planted in the spot where I`m trying to grow sweetpeas. Vesey`s is just down the road from where my son lives in Charlottetown. Good excuse to go visit.

I'm not so sure about the garlic as I've had an entire bed of garlic eaten by these pesty critters. Short of poison or traps, you have few options. I buy the small round green mice/rat bait and soak them for 10 minutes in apple juice, then drop them down the vole holes and cover the openings. Seems to do the trick.
Many voles use the tunnels dug by moles. Keep away the moles and the vole population declines. Here in the SE US we are planting Mole Plants, member of the castor family. The roots put out a toxin moles despise and they move out. Each plant covers about 40 feet around the plant. I have one in my herb garden and the moles are gone! So are the voles.

Every Spring my dear cat brings many, many voles to the back door each morning! He has a great time for about two months, (May-June) then nothing. I have no idea how he does it, but you might want to borrow a good mouser for a few weeks.
