please help identify mysterious plant

I was hoping that someone would recognize this strange plant that started growing in our garden. It seems to be a perennial as it is the second year in a row we've seen it, but last year it died before it got to this point. I think it's some sort of flower....strange mutated calla lily like thing. It seems to be attracting a lot of flies. It only opened up this morning. My husband is the gardener in the family and he doesn't recall planting anything like this.

Thanks!

Wow, that is interesting. Wish I could help but if nobody else can identify it, try the "Name that plant" forum. They are amazing there especially if you have a pic like this.

Looks like a kind of plant called a Corpse Flower. Does it smell like rotting meat?

I believe it is Dracunculus vulgaris. AKA Dragon Arum. Below is a link that will explain the flies

Cindra is correct, it is Dracunculus vulgaris. We have a couple specimens planted 70 feet from the house and therefore have never been bothered by the (alleged bad) smell. Mind you, there are many things which smell very good in the garden and that may disguise the odor. Worth having for the WOW factor.

Cheers,
MG

Thanks for all your help! I love Calla Lilies and if this is my husband's idea of a Calla Lily I need to have a word with him. I haven't actually gone out to smell it...I don't know if I want to now. :-)

Thanks again for helping me identify this oddity.
