Our home is in zone 5, so it may differ from yours. I just drop mine to the bottom of my pond. Yes, they do freeze with the water, but come back when I pull them up to the side in the spring. I try to keep only hardy plants in the pond though. My water lilies always come back as do arrowheads, corkscrew, etc. Papyrus however, has to come indoors, where it is placed in water and left in a sunny window.
