Well it is theft. There is a market for recycled bricks and I imagine that the person doing the demo has sold them to someone.

BTW, you can stay legal by buying old bricks at building supply stores. Some of them are operated by Habitat for Humanity and proceeds go to supply affordable housing.

I suspect that just such an old farmhouse was demolished on the property where my house currently stands -- whenever I dig a hole in the back yard to plant a tree or shrub, I always dig up a number of old bricks.
Over the three years since I've been here, I have dug up quite a pile of bricks (and loads of other construction garbage).
Of course I have re-used the bricks for garden edging, but also for providing a solid base/pedestal for rock garden boulders (so that they don't sink into the soil, over many years...)
I bet that any old farmhouse bricks you leave behind will likewise end up being buried under whatever is being built in its place....

You generally get what you pay for. Bricks for buildings are not made for laying on the ground (vs. pavestones.) I think you will find they begin to crumble after just a couple of years as they pick up moisture.

....the ones I dug up have been in the ground, picking up moisture, for well over twenty years -- and they're NOT crumbling at all.
I wish they had crumbled -- that would have made my digging considerably easier :O)
