Of course you can, but don't go for the granular stuff, use the water soluable one. I like 15-30-15. Mix it in a watering can and water it into the soil at the roots. Do this after a rain or watering so the fertilizer doesn't burn the roots.

You can also use compost or manure tea, or a combination of both--you can even add seaweed powder. Get a cloth bag--gunny sack old pillow case--whatever. Shovel in the manure or compost or whatever, and set it in a 5 gallon pail to steep. Use the resulting water and water it in at the roots the same as the fertilizer

No not a high nitrogen fertilizer like 30-15-30 use the 20-20-20, it's a balanced fertilizer. In case you don't know what the numbers stand for --
The first number is nitrogen--it puts the green in things--great for lawns but you don't need that much for vegetables. Sometimes too much can work against you.

The second number is potassium--It promotes strong stems and growth, it is an overall tonic for the plant.

The third number is potash--this is for flowers and fruit

You see a balanced combination of all of these is a good all around fertilizer for almost anything, so use the 20-20-20

Thanks for the reminder of what the NPK does for the plants.

Of course, if you have cacti or other succulent plants, you'll want to dilute that to about a 1/4 ratio. Some plants (and include the C&S in this) don't want high nitrogen to begin with - it gives them bloated growth.
