In May a friend and I went to RBG plant sale. They usually have some lovely annuals. I bought some beautiful blue petunias, planted them and gave them a little trim to make them fuller, put trimmings in soil beside rooted plants and they came up. I don't think it would work well later in the season. The started plants conceal cuttings until several weeks later the pot is covered in flowers.
