my sunflower is partially broken at ground level can it be saved?

I have a kong sunflower that partially broke at ground level due to high winds.

As soon as I found out what happened I put a stake to it to support it and I packed a mound of dirt around the affected area and above the damage so that the ground level is now higher than before. Finally I watered the plant. Will the sunflower heal itself and survive?

Just how big is this plant now? Do not pack earth around an open 'wound' otherwise you are inviting creatures to invade the plant. If the top isn't wilting, then perhaps there's hope in that enough nutrients are being channelled upwards. You may not get as large a flower though.

Thanks for the tip,I really have great hope that my sunflower will survive. Its knee high tall and I noticed that there are fresh miniature flower buds sprouting from all along its lenght where the mature leaves used to be.
