Cool unusual beneficial insect!

I found these out back today, and at first I thought they were mealybugs. But they were fast, they moved like a ladybug larva, and they did not have those cottony nests. They were all concentrated near some aphids. I never kill bugs unless I am positive on the identification and I know I don't want them, and I'm really glad I left these alone. It turns out they are Mealybug Destroyers (Cryptolaemus montrouzieri ), related to ladybugs. They are a long ago imported beneficial brought in to California to control mealybugs, but they also prey on aphids when mealybugs are scarce. I don't know where mine came from because they are not supposed to be tolerant of our winters. I have never seen one before and I guess I likely won't again, but it's still really neat :-)

So - if you think you have mealys, double check first, to make sure you don't kill some unusual beneficials!!
