Which plants do your Monarchs like best?

My Monarch butterflies really like my liatris ligulistylus and choose it over many other native and non-native plants in my garden, including other liatris. I have several butterfly bushes in shades of purple and white. 'White Profusion' (the white one) is their favourite. I had read that somewhere and it is true.

I have noticed that the monarchs here like my red valerian, yarrow and my herbs. They also love milk weed and wild asters that grow in the fields. I've planted some verbena bonariensis to see if that attracts them. I've also noticed that they seem to like my maple trees for some reason. Marg

I'll second the vote for Liatris ligulistylis -- it is by far the best plant that I've ever seen for Monarchs.

Butterfly bush and any other plants that attract all butterflies

This year I have quite a few plants that are supposed to attract butterflies but unfortunately, we have had virtually no Monarchs this year - I saw one pass through my backyard, and another took a stop on one of my cedars. In previous years my Asclepias were the main attraction. There are lots of cabbage white butterflies this year though. Intresting about the Liatris - I must watch mine to see if any come this late.
