With quite a bit of mulch, I've seen two species survive several winters in a zone 4/5 garden (just south of Ottawa).

These are likely majoo bajoo (spell?) bananas. The fruit is not edible. Source, northern japan. Bananas will die to the ground each winter. So you would need to cut the plant down to it's mid trunk and mulch heavily.

In vancouver they will be protected by a crate and heavily mulch. Vancouver is in a zone 8 area.
