Shallot Seeds

I planted shallots last fall and dug them up today. Something I didn't know about shallots is that they have flowers. I finally learned about various stages garlic goes through. Instead of bulbils, shallots have seeds. Are they somewhat similar to ornamental onion. I have saved the seeds. If I start them indoors in early spring what will I get in late summer? Mostly, I want to know how many stages shallots go through until they become shallots. Do I need to save seeds from every crop? Liliana

RE: Shallot Seeds

I grow shallots, each year when I harvest and dry them I keep the best looking shallots to replant for the next years crop. If flowers start to form on my shallots I cut them off. If you want to plant seed I think you will find that at the end of the growing season each seed will form one bulb which you could dry, store and plant for the next years crop which should then form clumps.
