 o
are miniature roses hardy in Montreal?

A coworker got a miniature rose in a pot after illness and gave it away. I stuck it in the front and it is blooming, so I guess it likes where it is. But I know nothing about them. Do I take it in for the winter? or leave it out?
thanks
Joe

I planted about 6-8 and a couple of years ago and treated them the same as with the regular roses. I covered them with mulch and styrofoam cones. Only 3 survived the winter. The second winter around none of the miniatures survived. I never tried to take them indoors in the fall. Maybe you could try. I didn't because I have a problem with space and have to be very selctive about the plants I return indoors when the weather gets cold.
Maybe we can get some advice from the experts out there.
How are your clivia seedlings doing?

My wife likes to buy a couple of those from time to time. Once the blooms are spent we plant them in the garden. They last a couple of years but some do not make the first winter, at the modest cost it is no big loss. The bonus is those that survive and provide another year of enjoyment. We are zone 6A.

thanks for the input.
Hi Consentida, after an intitial burst of enthusiasm they have not done anything more. They are exactly the same they were at the end of June. How are yours?

I have 3 miniatures I've planted over the last 4 years and they are all doing well. I have them in a bed next to the house.

Merrilee, perhaps the fact that you planted them next to the house gives them and extra protection because the sun heats the wall and it reflects unto the earth around it. Good idea. Also you are in zone 6, which could also be a factor.

Joe, mine grew a bit more all of them have 1 leaf of about 7 to 10 cms long. What I noticed is that we have different cultivars because some of them are more elongated than others. I still keep them indoors. I don't trust the squirrels! One of these days I will learn how to post pictures in GW and you will see then, so you can give me your opinion.

Hi Consentida,
yes, the seeds are different. One of them sent up a pale yellow leaf, then did nothing else. Mine have done nothing new since the last time I wrote.
If you have a flickr account (free) you could upload pictures there and give me/us the link.
You are right to be concerned about the squirrels. They are back to their mischief. They dug out an Oncidium last night.

Joe, I'm looking across the forums to see if there is a thread called "Posting pictures in Gardenweb for Dummies", then I'm going to read the instructions and learn how to do it. lol . I confess that I'm totally ignorant, coupled with the fact that my spare time to learn how to do it is practically zero at this point. In the meantime I will take a picture and will send you an email with the attachment, so you can compare. Can you do the same?
Squirrels? Do not mention them! They did a number to my night blooming jasmine seedling that I had purchased from Richters early this spring!!!

Consentida,
this might be a forum that does not allow pictures. If you look at the page GardwenWeb Forums you will see that only some of the forums have an icon of a camera beside their name; those are the ones that allow photos. But links are always allowed (as in below).
My problem is that I do not have a digital camera or, in fact, any camera at all. If I buy a disposable camera can I get the pictures on a disk?

At one time miniature roses were considered quite hardy and it was recommended to plant them outdoors. Now, I am not so sure. They seem to be marketed more as house plants. It is possible they are being grown from less hardy stock now. At least that is what I suspect.

Joe,

To avoid all the trouble of posting etc ,for the time being what I'll do is to take a picture of the seedlings and e-mail it directly to you. Sorry! I never owned a disposable camera and I don't know if you can have the pics. on a disc.

Ontnative: thanks for the info. I love miniature roses but as a houseplant they are completely out of the question for me. I have more than enough plants indoors and outdoors than I have to bring in in the fall.

I grow miniature roses in pots, then I can store them in my unheated garage over winter. It helps not to have to bend so far as when they are planted in the ground.
