ladylock sun in late afternoon then evening is a vague discription, it depends on the how strong the sun is at those times. I recommend at least 6hrs of good sun, the more the better. Keep in mind depends on what plants you are using. George.

Sounds like a part shade area. In which case, echinaceas (purple coneflowers), astilbes, hydrangeas (shrub), trollius, phlox will do well. Best describe the sun condition. Is it very hot? If you take a piece of white paper and hold your hand above it, does it cast a deep dark shadow? This is indicative of a strong sun. If the shadow seems light, you have a 'weak' sun and therefore the area is considered a shady area. To give us gardeners a better idea, can you describe the location of this patch (south, east, west, north (I suspect based on description, it's north facing)

However before proceeding, do understand that you'd have to amend your soil. Planting isn't as simple as plunking plants in the ground. So can you describe the quality of your soil (clay, sandy, loamy?). To prepare soil, break up the soil and add compost. I also would add composted manure - this adds years of great plant performance.
