You could most certainly do this. They do well in part shade places and prefer moist (but not too damp grounds). I've used some plants to intermix with cannas for example and perennials like heucheras.

However choose tuberous forms that grow upright as opposed to cascading (which are meant to be planted in hanging planters).

I too have been in redesigning mode and have made plans for next year's garden. Rather feel very excited about the possibilities.
