sweet potato vine

I am doing this for a friend who wonders if she can eat the tuber growing under her sweet potato vine. She heard Mark Cullen on CBC radio say the vine provides lovely foilage in the summer and a meal in the fall. What she has dug up does not look at all like what I know as a sweet potato, so understandably it worries her to eat something that more resembles a bunch of white potatoes all joined together. If it helps I can take a picture of this siamese triplet tuber and post a link.

Any insight from you experts out there would be appreciated.

They are safe to eat and the leaves can also be used as salad greens. The majority of the varieties we grow as basket fillers and ground covers are natural color mutations from the commercially grown varieties of warmer climates.

Definitely safe to eat, but I have heard that they're not particularly tasty. Not bad, but just not yummy like regular sweet potatoes. I haven't been curious enough to try them myself, and in any event, I prefer to keep the tubers for next year. I have grown my own sweet potatoes before and they looked odd too (not enough potash), but they were really, really good!
