Starting almonds

Hi everyone,
I picked up some fresh almonds from under a tree this week, and was told that these are edible almonds, (Pollard's Almond) and that there is only that one tree in the area. I thought that almonds were not self fertile, but I guess this one is, because there are a lot of almonds!
I would like a couple of these trees in my garden, so does anyone know how to get these almonds to sprout? The shell is very tough, so it looks as though it might need nicking and freezing and soaking. Would like to skip the guessing part, so please let me know if there is a way to get these to sprout.
Thanks....

I have not done the sprouting of almonds. They are prunus communis so similar to cherry, I think. Take out of hard shell and soak overnight might be an idea? Never done it myself. |

| The book on Seeds by MacVicar page 203 says to place the seeds in damp vermiculite and chill in the 'frig for at least a month. Then pot them up,-- germination takes several months. |

Thanks for the help, I'll try that. I guess I should start now. I have enough to experiment different methods. |

There is info on starting almonds from seeds on the UBC Botanical Gardens site. Go under "Growing fruit and nuts". |

...sounds like it needs to be stratified. Also, lets not forget our friend google ;) http://www.ehow.com/how_4454761_sprout-almonds.html |

I bought natural almonds and natural filberts and will try them by winter sowing. Those are interesting articles on the google sites. It is intriguing that you can increase the nutrient value by sprouting them. Caroline Zone 3 Calgary |
