I bought one a few weeks ago, used it on 22 bags of leaves, some dry, some wet, and even some frozen, and was amazed at how well it did, under it's worse operating conditions. The wet / frozen leaves went through cutting cord a bit fast, but considering all, I am impressed. Definitely take out any twigs, or stones, it does not like them, and will not mulch them. Using it for mulch for large garden beds of roses.

I have had a Black and Decker Leaf Hog for over three years now. It will take small twigs, spruce cones, pine needles, etc., and has performed well for me. I bring lots of leaves home to shred for my 4 compost bins, and also shred some leaves for the gardens, mixing them with UCGs (used coffee grounds) and using as mulch. Here's a photo of the mulch.

The blades are a hard plastic and they have seen better days, but it's still mutilating everything which goes through.

Met with a lady this year that uses one by Yardworks and I think I'll try that one next if I ever need to make a purchase. It has metal blades which can be sharpened.

Mine is electric and I will purchase likewise in the future. It's easy to handle. If you want you can also go to the Soil and Compost Forum and do a search to find out more info. There's been a few discussions on these machines lately and there's a few opinions out there. :O)

I bought one at a resale shop, Value Village, and just love the way it mulches the leaves.
