The bamboo garden picture does look quite exotic and that sure looks like a good sized cactus in front of the planting.

I just returned from a trip to Asia. In one city I spotted this garden park (google image search for Greenbelt makati) and it was lush with huge plants giant ferns, gingers, ti plants, rubber trees, palm trees, mother's tongue, zz plants. To die for. You might be able to draw ideas from this place. However it was very hot and humid and so the plants thrive over there.
