Yes the big ones will grow and produce flowers. The small ones are still immature and will grow a plant but not produce flowers until they get bigger.

Like daffodils and Tulips, the Dahlia bulbs produce bulblets that eventually grow into a viable tubers. They do produce seed, but the best way to get new plants is from the bulbs--The bulbs eventually get old, don't produce or simply die and the bulblets grow and take over.

If you have any soft ones discard them--they are old and may be rotting. You can plant more than one tuber in a hole so you have a bushy plant with many shoots and thus more flowers. Or you can plant some bulblets with the bigger ones.

If you ask around I'm sure you can find some takers for your extras

I will post a link to a post by jroot from Ontario who is known for his knowledge on Dahlias. You can do a search on other posts he has done and find some of the best info available.

Any tuber with an 'eye', no matter how small, will produce a viable plant if overwintered properly. The following photo shows Dahlias planted this year that had small tubers but good 'eyes'. Some had no 'eyes' that I could see but they all came up nice!

Tiffy, those are exactly the dahlias I have, the red ones. You wouldn't happen to know the name of it?

Tiffy and Oilpainter, thank you for your advice. Extremely appreciated. I thought I'd have to discard them but now I have to find a good home for them. I have way too many of them.

Those are unknown Dahlias given to me by friends. I used to have quite the collection on another property - over 30 - but one year had to give them up due to back issues and the next year we moved. Hadn't planted any until a couple of years ago and it seems like now I am hooked on them again. :O)

I will dig mine out after the first hard frost takes them, wash them well, dry them in a day's sun, and then throw them on my basement floor until the spring when I will return to them for splitting and to see which are viable.
