Bearded irises

I have some bearded irises (I think). I realize it's probably too late to divide. I have no place to put them anyways. Can I dig them up and store them away so that I can prepare this particular bed for next spring or can I divide in the early spring and give or trade them away? The irises didn't produce too many flowers this spring so I think it just needs dividing.

Yes you can, the earth isn't frozen yet. If you divide then put the roots back in with the "fan" of the leaves facing south and not too deep. To protect from winter kill, pat down some shredded leaves and put some sacking over that, and weigh down the edges with dirt or a few rocks. As soon as it starts to warm up, remove the sacking (you could use newspaper, but it can fly away) and as much of the leaves as thaw out, do this gradually. Irises don't need very fancy flower beds. I have some growing in a mix of clay, gravel and weeds on the west side of the house, and they come back every year, in spite of drought and frost.
