Nancy, you can dig them up now if your ground is not frozen, however you will need a place to store them once they're dug up and a place for when you move. A cold room is ideal or a slightly heated garage.

Knowing my experience from a big move in 2000, I wouldnÂt do it again. Too much to worry about and too much work. I would only move the most precious plants that are dear to your heart, the others all can be easily purchased and started again.

Rockie .. I live in a different zone but in the past my neighbours and friends have moved their gardens by dividing now ... potting them and putting them at a friends house in the ground. In the spring you can pick them up and transplant to your new garden. Some plants make it others dont but if you do it now you should be ok .. water and mulch. If they have a bed close to the house that would help out too.

Are you moving far? One other option is to have it written into the sales contract that you will be by in the spring to divide certain plants. This isn't always an easy thing to arrange, but stranger things than that have been written into house sale contracts :-)

If you do dig them up and store them somewhere cold (preferably just around freezing) - use a big pot. Don't go for the smallest size that they'll fit into. Garbage cans and laundry baskets lined with trash bags will do just fine for temporary winter homes.
