 o
'Dry Stall' product in Montreal area

Posted by winnjoe MTL (My Page) on

I have mentioned before about looking for horticultural pumice (in Montreal). None of the leads have worked out; the Montreal Bonsai society doesn't answer its phone, and the distributor in Toronto doesn't carry it anymore!

Someone at the Bonsai forum suggested a product called Dry Stall, used in horse stalls, available at feed stores. Has anyone ever used this for plants?

Where did you try looking for these stones? Have you tried orchid sellers? Are you just seeking these things for it's wicking capabilities?

What about the Quebec Rock Garden Society? Members might have an idea where to get horticultural pumice.

Joe,

I can tell you that Dry-Stall is an appropriate and an almost-perfect substitute for pumice. I have not used it myself (I've been fortunate enough to have pumice from the States, but soon I'm going to have to find a tack store and get some DS) but many of my cactus-and-other-succulent friends and acquaintances use it and speak well of it.

On a different note....

I'm going to Montreal (for the 1st time!) in a week - are there any particular gardens I should go to? I'm already planning a trip to MBG.

Thanks,

Jeff

Nina,

From my limited understanding, pumice (at least in the SW U.S.) came from just Arizona. It's difficult to get in the eastern U.S., too. That's why DS and the fired-clay pellets ?Turface? are used.

You can use Diatomaceous earth and should be able to get a bag from Princess Auto for around 15$ for around 30 pounds.
It is marketed as ultrasorb all purpose absorbent.

I was at an orchid show earlier this year and a seller had bags of what looked like Turface. I used some with my orchids and short time later I discovered the pellets were plastic, colored to look like terracotta. Don't quite know what benefit plastic pellets have?

thanks all.
sorry about the delay Jeff, no, I don't know about gardens other than the MBG. If you are still here on the 24th the Orchid Society of Eastern Canada is having its show.
