planting chrysanthemums

One of my neigbhours, had a number, five actually potted Chrysanthemums in front of their house for decoration for Thanksgiving.

This past week they had them all thrown out to the curb. I went along and picked them up and planted them, in my vegetable patch More or less healing them in to see if they make it or not

At least the plant and dirt with them will be compost, right?

But what would you say are the chances , of their survival

Some nice colours. I cut the tops down some, the bloom mostly and just left that on top, watered them in well. A couple of times watering well. Stepped on them gently, and have put a good layer of leaves over the entire bed

I hate to see things thrown out.

My poor car trunk was a mess until yesterday. Bags of leaves, and garden stuff, gathered to bring home.

I would say that your odds are pretty good, if you got them before they "passed on".

I heeled several in last year, and probably 70% of them made it. My mistake was that I cut them back. Apparently, we should cut the flowers off, but that is all.

This year, I built a little box about 8 inches high to go around my best clump, and it will be filled with leaves, as you did, and left for the winter. Without the box, the wind comes between our homes and blows all the leaves away.

Many folks don't realize that mums can survive our winter. there are hardy mums now being sold and I had one from last year that's blooming now. So go for it.

I have many hardy mums that return every year. Some kinds return and some don't. It's worth a try. I brought home a lot of broken off branches from mums at the stores this fall, every time I went shopping. I stuck them in the garden immediately with some water. Some have rooted. I'm hoping for a lot of new starts next year. I know they root well.

Looking for them at the road side on pick up day is a great idea! I may do that myself. I'm going to be looking for bags of leaves next week, as well. You never know what you'll find at the roadside this time of year...

I have no room for more bagged leaves.
I can't believe how most people do not keep their leaves.

I had a number of those big paper bags left over from dumping all the bagged leaves on my garden beds

Though about disposing of them into the blue boxes but they are bulky

I found a great use for some of them Put in my Canna tubers and other plant stuff, left some dry leaves in each bag.

As well I am making a new garden bed at front of the house and thought perhaps I could use the bags, torn open to cover the area of the new garden bed.
This then might save me digging up all the sod. I could then put soil and compost etc. directly over these bags.

What do you think?

New garden bed, though, not til next spring. I have had enough of digging this year and am off to Florida for the winter, in two weeks.
