It's possible in your zone but you have to create conditions for the plant to survive. Plants in planters have it's roots far more exposed to the harshness of the weather. Especially the extreme lows and highs. To combat this, I recommend using large containers which are lined with styrofoam (like building insulating materials). The aim is to keep the soil temperature steady - not necessarily warm. Just to keep temperatures steady.

Mulch the top as well. Use plants that are good up to zone 2.
