WANTED: Harvesting cannas

My mom just gave me my first cannas and they are coming up well. I will want to get in on a trade at some point, but how do I divide the cannas? And how do I store them over the winter?

RE: WANTED: Harvesting cannas

Cannas are divided pretty easily-hard to kill from my limited experience. My mom gave me my first cannas too, so my heart warms at the thought of generational plants! I just take a shovel and dig up what I want to divide-or you could cut out what you want with a knife then dig it up and transplant. As far as wintering them, I live in NC, but lived in Eastern KY briefly, I think it's probably warm enough that you won't have to dig them up over winter. Ask your mom or a neighbor if she's not in KY. But if you do, simply dig them up, and store them in dry peat moss ( I winter my stuff in brown paper-more air than plastic bags)in a basement, or cool dark place. Hope that helps, and good luck with your cannas-do you know what color the blooms will be?
