Getting rid of cannas

I planted a *FEW* cannas 15 years ago and now they are practically wall to wall in a large bed. I want to get rid of them entirely. How can I get them out? I would rather dig them than poison them, but at this point I am open to anything. This bed is also adjacent to the house so I have to consider that in my treatment. Thanks!!
