Canna Seed Troubles

Dear All,

I am new to the canna seeds. I really need some good advice. I received canna seeds in trade and planted and recently read the faq after planting. So I've taken all seeds out of potting mix that I had in tray under bottom heat. I've read that you must puncture seed and soak for a couple of days. Well I've tried a box cuter, drill and file to nic the dang seed but nothing happens. I'm getting really frustrated here and would appreciate any tips on what worked for you to nic seeds.

Thanks very

Puncture is not the word I would use. You need to remove a bit of the hard outer coating then soak the seeds for a day in warm water. I think most folks use a nail file to remove the outer layer of the seed. You don't need to remove the entire outer layer. You want to see white.

I use a narrow triangular file. File on the opposite end of the seed from the circular attachment scar. It is only necessary to file down just enough to see a lighter colored area.

I've used a box cutter to make a TINY incision to the outer layer. I have to hold on to the seed with pliers and then carve the box cutter blade back and forth in the same spot until i see a bit of white. I would suggest you use some sort of pretection for your hands like gardening gloves or even mechanic gloves so that the risk of cutting yourself is minimized. Then i soak them in water. I've germinated them in water before too.

Thanks for the help. I finally was able to get to the white part of the seed. It worked with just using a regular nail file. I've now got them soaking in water.
