Generally, the leaves will exhibit yellow spots or streaks, puckering, and the spots or streaks will becomes brown and die. The virus' will also affect the blooms.
Google canna virus and you will have enough to read for months. You should be able to find some photo's of diseased plants that way too.

Most often, the cheaper the plant or rhizome, or those purchased from a discount or home improvement store, the more likely it is to be infected.

    Hello,
There are three main viruses which affect cannas.

Bean Yellow Mosaic : It causes chlorotic mosaic patterns on the leaves.

Hippeastrum Mosaic : It causes crinkled foliage and chlorotic streaking, which weakens and could possibly kill the plants.

Canna Yellow mottle : This virus which is the most dangerous causes foliar chlorosis and necrotic mottling (Yellow streaks that eventually turn into brown patches). This causes the plants to look horrible and sometimes die.

These viruses are usually spead by insects such as aphids and other pests.

One good way to recognise canna virus is to look at the new leaves carefully as the unfurl. If you notice any streaking on the leaves (in non- variegated foliage types)it could be canna virus, especially if the plant is healthy. In variegated foliage cannas it is a little more difficult to identify canna virus. Plants that a stressed or over fertilized can sometimes show similar streaking as canna virus but the streaks usually do not turn brown.

Whenever i get new cannas i look for signs of canna virus and if i suspect any has canna virus i get rid of them. Thats how i maintain a healthy stock of cannas.

    Hi Siam Cannas,

Can you tell me which virus this is?
I was at a local Big box store. I mentioned to a staff member that these didn't look right to me. They also received a triple layered skid of cleopatras that looked like they had the yellow streaking and brown areas.

I suggested that they speak to their supllier. I went back a couple of times and the cannas were still for sale and being sold.

    What a drag.

    Hey Green Thumb Guy,

The leaves does have the pale green streaking on them, if you noticed if those green streakings turn brown and die on the older leaves, then it would definitely be canna virus. If the plants were very stressed or not growing under the right conditions that could also cause the streaking, but I think it is Canna Yellow Mottle Virus!
I would not buy those cannas or any others sold there. The leaves of healthy cannas with good growing conditions are supposed to look like those in the Last picture.

I definitely wouldn't buys these. I was really disappointed to see that they kept them for sale and that they seem to be from the company trademarking the Tropicanna canna.

A couple years back, I bought some Pink Beauty that I now believe they were infected by one type of virus as the leaves showed the brown streaking and the plants were not very robust nor beautiful.

As a result of this, I try to exercise great care and quarantine in the handling dividing of my tubers.

I'm just starting to clean mine up now and will be potting up starting next month. I use a strong bleach solution for my pruners for cutting different tubers. It's a pain but, it gives me a peice of mind.

Despite this last spring, I did have to throw out a couple pots as they showed a mosaic pattern on the leaves. I didn't see any other signs of virus for the rest of the summer. I'm not letting my guard dow this year either.

    Can't wait for spring!

    Thanks for your info.
