True Pink Canaas?? Are they out there?

Jocque

Hi all,

Just wondering if anyone has discovered a true pink canna? I have ordered a a few varieties over the years and they seem to always appear more orange or red then pink. If anyone has any experience and maybe some pictures...I would really appreciate it!

Thank you,

Jocque in Ontario

Jocque, check out this website. There's some great pinks here and they're very reliable

Hi Jocque, here is another site you might want to consider. They are based in Ontario and sell 18 canna cultivars so you might be able to find what you are looking for here.

    Thanks Rebecca,
Is this a picture of yours? It's absolutely gorgeous. I think it is a new canna out there...so I will be on the lookout for some tubers. I keep hoping the ones I try are pink but they all end up closer to a coral/orange which is not what I want.

    Cheers!

Yes, that one is mine. I bought it last year at Horns. Looks like they still have them available for $1.50 per rhizomes. I highly recommend them. Horn Canna Farms

I found the Maudie Malcolm on the Park's Garden web site. Do you think that would work?

If you like Cotton Candy pink, then Cupid is the canna for you. It is a dwarf variety, and can be found at Aloha Tropicals.

'Erebus' is a sort of salmony-pink but it's gorgeous. I got that (same as I do every year) at a local nursery. Canna x iridiflora 'Ehemannii' (sp?) is a deep magenta-pink with pendulous flowers, but it's never cheap. If you can find a rhizome for about $12.00 you got a bargain. I wanted it badly enough to pay over $20 through Plant Delights.

    Beautiful pictures.

I'm confused, why is Horns so much cheaper than Karchesky?

Does Horn sell rizhomes and Karchesky sells growing plants?

Seems it would be much cheaper to buy from Horn.

i'd say the price difference is because karchesky has more variety and selection.

Not trying to be stupid, but don't these things multiply? Why do you need to spend another $20 bucks on a single rizonme every year? I'm hoping to buy a few, end up with plenty (after a couple of years), and be done buying forever. Not true?

In your zone they should be almost weeds I would think. Them multiply lots in my zone.

    Hi Dighappy,
The China Doll Canna is gorgeous...I will try to get that one next year for sure. Does anyone have a picture of Cupid? Minigrannie mentioned it and I was wondering if anyone has grown it personally.

Thank you everyone for your feedback. I've tried for about 4/5 years to find true pink and it looks like my search will be over next year.

    Thanks a million!!!

    Hi ya'll,

I live in Oklahoma. This past April (2005) I went to an Herb Festival in a little town near Tulsa. One of the vendors there was the Horn family, of Horn cannas. I bought a huge bag full of Orange Durbin (Tropicana) for only $9! All the rhisomes were huge and had 4-5 or more eyes. They were clean, healthy and the freshest ones I had ever bought from anywhere.
I think the reason they sell theirs so cheap is that they don't have as much overhead. It is a family owned and operated farm. They have only a small crew of hired help.
They have a great selection of the standard cannas that most people are familiar with, but they also have a "Growers Choice" list of fancier cannas.
Anyway, I am not trying to sell for them, but just thought you ought to know that their prices are not indictive of lesser quality or inferior cannas, but of a fair market price for their crops.
By the way, they have about five PINK cannas.
I plan to get the Maudie and Journey's End in my next prurchase, although I may just have to go ahead and order the other five or six that caught my fancy and I am just gah-gah about.

Now that I know how to overwinter cannas here (they survive the winter cold just fine but rot in spring because the soil doesn't warm up quickly enough)--now I dig them up, store them, pot them in spring and keep them in a warm place until they sprout, then put them in my unheated minigreenhouses until it's safe to put them outside, I don't need to spend $20 per rhizome every year (for the unusual ones I crave). I think I'd spend the money if I hadn't figured out the overwintering.

As for Karchesky vs. Horn, Karchesky offers a lot of really rare varieties, including many of my favorite species and species hybrid varieties. Horn sells great hybrids, but the selection is much more limited.

Now that you've supplied me with a source of reasonably-priced cannas!!!, does anyone know of a source of good,
    but not overpriced CALADIUMS???
    Thanks!
