Bagged Cannas

Howdy All

I have never grown cannas before so I'm excited to get started.

All the nurseries here just started selling all of their summber bulbs and I wanted to get ahold of some before all the good ones are gone (can't really start planting until May here though)

So my question is they are being sold in different forms, even at the same nursery. They had bagged Canna from Van Bloem that were in green bags with no holes so it's tough to see what your getting and I've read that plastic can lead to rot so do people buy these bagged canna and sit on them for two months until it's time to plant? They also had large crates full of rhizomes in what looks like potting soil...I picked one up and the whole thing was pretty much white...is that correct? Not sure which way to go so any help would be appreciated. I found the kind I like but it was in a bag and I don't want to buy something if it's going to rot in two months before I can plant it

A good rhizome should be firm, white, and have sprouts.
Anything mushy, black, or moldy will not grow.
You can bring the rhizomes home and pot them up and place them in a sunny window to get a good head start on outdoor planting. In zone 5b, that would be a good idea to get them growing ahead of schedule so they will bloom as they go into the garden or shortly after.

Alice and all canna lovers, hi there. I am new to Cannas too and was glad to see Kylie here from the brug forum...HI Kylie :-)

So far I learned that for me as a newbie if I want to have a true to the parent canna, I should go with rhizomes right or wrong?

Who or what place is a trusted place to get what you really order or buy?

Absolutely....on the rhizomes that is. If you plant canna by seed, you are liable to get anything it may have cross pollinated with. So, to be true to form, ( and a WHOLE lot quicker!), you'll want to stick with the rhizomes.

Have you ever purchased canna in the bag form?
I am waiting for my camera to be fixed but I will post some pictures of the rhizomes I got to see what you think.
There are some "white eyes" but there are also some black parts of it so not entirely sure if what I got is good or not

Hi Lucy,
Its great to see you here, yes to get a canna plant exactly like the parent you would need to get a rhizome. There are a few cannas that grow true from seeds, as you already know :)

Yes, I have gotten rhizomes in the bagged form.
Yes, will look at your photos. Thank you.
If the sprouts are good, that rhizome should grow for you.
The black sections should be remove though, as that will not.
