black cannas control - help pls!

My neighbor's yard had a patch of black cannas last year - the house is now abandoned and the cannas patch has tripled in size!! They grow to 5' tall and frankly, look a bit scary - even when it blooms bright orange flowers. I am sure that cannas enthusiasts would be overjoyed by this, but it is very difficult to control and they are now popping up in my yard. The biggest problem I have with them is that they eventually mold and smell and then are quite unattractive. I'm sure it would be a much different story if somebody was actively upkeeping it (unfortunately I cannot do so).

Which brings me to my question ... how do you get rid of or control these plants? This has become quite a problem in the yard and some helpful hints would mean alot. Thank you so much for any input...

Thanks ;-). Any other suggestions?
Would putting a brick or stone boundary around them stop the spread?

Take a weed wacker to them. Eventually they will rot if they don't get sun. Or you could dig them and send them to me lol.

Thanks taz, I would definitely send them around to folks if the place wasn't owned by an invisible investor. If I decide to do it anyhow, will let you all know!

Did you get rid of them? If you dig up any that are on your property, I would be happy to pay shipping.

If you post them on your area freecycle or craigslist as "free-you dig", you'll have tons of takers.

Wish I was close enough. I'd surely be digging them. I'd even get lots of extras so I could send some to those interested, but not so close. (Hint - hint)
I lost most of my Canna last winter, but have a few seeds that came up late summer. Not sure what they'll turn out to be, but I have then inside so I can find out next summer. Sure would like to get my hands on a start of those dark leafed ones in the picture above. They'd really look good next to my hardy banana plants.
