Yes you can.

I stopped cleaning mine in the fall also. I find the dirt helps them thru the winter better. Also, I just don't have time to dig and clean them up then.

I've grown cannas for decades, and actually sell over 800 rhizomes to a local nursery each year. I probably have 2500 to 3000 rhizomes at the end of each summer that I dig and store in the basement. I've tried several methods, but my best success is to dig them in the Fall (I do not clean them) and stick them in cheap black plastic garbage bags with peat moss that are inside some wax covered produce boxes I get for free from the local grocery store. I sprinkle a little peat moss over the bulbs several times as I fill the bags. This seems to work best. The peat moss absorbs any excess moisture, and keeps the rhizomes from drying out. Dried out rhizomes usually die.
