All of my gingers have a strong, wonderful scent, both the leaves and the rhizomes. I've never noticed cannas having any scent. Cut some and see if they smell good. :)

I checked to see if it had any scent at all and no. I'm guessing its a dwarf Canna. Its only about 2 feet tall. A neighbor of mine had these before hurricane Katrina hit us and she thought for sure that they wouldnt survive the salt water and all the other chemicals that were in the flood water (all 12 feet of water). But sure enough these little guys started to pop up all over her property. So she was happy to give me some. This spring as I drive around it seems that everyone that had Canna before the storm still has it and its almost as the flood water gave them a boost. So thats why I want to grow these things, I figured if Katrina couldnt kill them then nothing could. Anyway thanks for the advice.
