Should I plant them in pots or wait?

I bought cannas and thought I would plant them in pots and transplant them to their spots in the garden May 15. Is this a bad idea? Should I wait and plant them in the ground after May 15?

Having them potted and sitting by some heat would get them growing faster before you planted them out later. They would languish in what might still be cool/cold soil in May, so at least they would have a bit of a head start.
