Successful Microclimate in zone 6

After watering some veggie seedlings, and checking out spring activity in my garden this morning, I did a double take toward last years canna bed planted by the side the house. I couldn't believe it!!!! New canna shoots were emerging!!!! It was an experiment of sorts, because I read many threads where people insisted on digging them up each year in the colder zones, but that's a whole lot of digging. Tubers are such a bear after one seasons' growth, and I had so many that I brought in only the ones growing in pots. The other part of the experiment is to see if the others I left in the ground without as much protection in another bed will survive, but I doubted.
