I am zone 6, & mine usually make it even in unprotected parts of the yard. I lost many one year though when we had a very bad winter, when temps got below zero for several days in a row. Even then a few came back.

Certain varieties are hardier than others. Richard Wallace, Robert Kemp, President, Florence Vaughn are a few of the really tough ones.

Also, a trick to winter survival is well-drained dry winter soil. In a boggy area, cannas do not survive winter for me here. But on a hillside, they come back every year without fail. Mulch them really well also, and you shouldn't have too many problems unless you get a really harsh winter in zone 6.
